The introduction of a new chipper and sawmill machine will boost the pine industry and enhance the work of sawmillers.

A demonstration using the machine was conducted by Nivis Motors at the Ministry of Forestry office in Nasinu yesterday.

Minister for Forests Osea Naiqamu said the chipper machine from England and the hydraulic sawmill were of good quality and would benefit sawmillers around Fiji.

“Nivis Motors demonstrated how the machine works and we all understand Government has plans on how the pine industry around Fiji will be a benefit to the economy,” Mr Naiqamu said.

“The pine scheme projects are in island groups such as Lau, Kadavu and Lomaiviti.

“They understand how important the pine industry is.

“When pine trees mature the landowners request for it to be used and Government looks into how they can be properly utilised.”

The minister commended Nivis Motors for opening another door to use the pine sawmill machine and chipper to make timber and woodchips.

“Woodchips have its market in Fiji now and just a few months ago the Biomass plant in Nadroga was opened and woodchips are in demand,” Mr Naiqamu said.

Nivis Motors Nasinu branch product manager, Neel Kumar said the machines were semi hydraulic and durable.

“We demonstrated how the machines worked and received a positive feedback from the sawmillers, the Forestry Minister and the New Zealand and British High Commissions,” Mr Kumar said.

“Nothing is wasted because the chipper machines end product are woodchips and they can be used in gardens.

“Villagers can get this machine, it’s easy to use and reduces waste.”
