Mohammed Hakim was among the 84 patients at the Northern Dialysis Centre in Labasa this week to receive one free dialysis treatment as a Christmas treat.

Northern Dialysis Centre administrator and board member of Labasa Hospital, Hazeem Hussein, said since last year they had been providing each patient with one free dialysis treatment for Diwali, Christmas and Eid.

Mr Hakim, 39, from Qarawa Settlement, Taveuni, and father of three said: “I would like to thank the officials of the centre for organising such kind of free treatment so that we can save $150.

“I travel to Labasa three to four times in a month. In one trip I spend about $300 to get my treatment done. Not only that, to save money, I sleep over at the Nasekula Mosque because accommodation is very expensive.”

Mr Hakim, who has been on dialysis treatment since 2016, operates a grocery shop on the island, sells dalo and yaqona from his farm to help pay for the treatment.

“Kidney problem is the most expensive sickness,” he said.

“If I don’t take dialysis on schedule I will suffer from shortness of breath, feel lazy and won’t be able to do any work. There is no cure for this sickness.”

He is urging parents to look after their children and have constant health checks.

“If my parents had been doing my medical checks I believe there would have been an early detection of my kidney problem,” he said.

Mr Hussein said if there were extra funds available they would provide free dialysis treatment also for Easter.
