The Vodafone Fijian football team is ranked 168th in the latest FIFA rankings released yesterday.

Fiji was 177th in September.

Fiji Football Association chief executive officer Mohammed Yusuf said this was a big achievement.

“We’re slowly moving towards our target to be ranked second in Oceania Football Confederation by 2020,” he said.

“Fiji FA is committed to ensure that we expose our players to higher ranked oppositions in Asia. These are costly but we are committed together in trying to promote women football as well. We’ll also be exposing our youths to international competitions as we believe these youths will adapt to our new philosophy of football.

“We’re slowly moving and I think we will achieve our targets in years to come.”

Yusuf said there was also more quality international friendly matches set-up for the national team and that would also be an advantage.

“We’ve played a total of 13 internationals this year won four, drew five and lost four. This is the highest number of internationals Fiji has ever played in its history. We scored 22 goals and 13 against us. If we take out the Tuvalu match then we have scored 14 goals against 13.”

Yusuf said there were lots of requirements to play an international friendly but they had been doing all to get the matches arranged in the FIFA window.

“The improvement in ranking is due to the number of international games Fiji has played this year, with the latest being against Estonia.”
