Man Hit By Taxi Becomes Latest Road Victim

Farmer Isikeli Delaivuna of Naweni Village in Cakaudrove has become the latest road victim.
Police Spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the accident occurred along the Drauninuku and Viani Village road in Savusavu yesterday.
“The victim was walking along the road at around 2am and was allegedly hit by a taxi driven by a 28-year-old man of Wailevu,” Ms Naisoro said.
“The suspect is in custody. It is alleged that he was driving under the influence of alcohol when the alleged incident occurred.”
Meanwhile, Police Chief of Operations Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Rusiate Tudravu said road fatalities this year was alarming.
The road death toll stands at 66 compared to 57 for the same period last year, he said.
“Despite the advisories issued on road safety we continue to record accidents on a daily basis,” ACP Tudravu said.
“While speeding and drink driving continue to be the two leading causes of accidents drivers need to be aware that fatigue can be a threat to one’s safety.
“The majority of the accidents are occurring either in the early hours of the morning or at night whereby drivers have fallen asleep at the wheel.
“During this festive season there will be a lot of social gatherings and movement and getting adequate rest will be vital.”
