Selection Is On Merit, Says Bower

Team Fiji chef de mission to the Commonwealth Games Patrick Bower says, athletes have to maintain their form or otherwise they will not qualify.
“It’s not a matter of us saying that we’ve the places available, it is more so the matter of we’ve the places available for those that qualify to go to the Commonwealth Games,” he told SUNsports yesterday.
Bower said they would not be sending people to the Games just for the sake of it.
“They have to earn their place because the level of competition at the Commonwealth Games is not like the Mini Games or the Pacific Games.
“It is regarded as the second highest competition to the Olympics and in some ways it is more like the Olympics anyway.”
Bower said they’ve already begun working with the athletes and he confirmed that Fiji would be represented in 12 sports. The Commonwealth Games will be on April 4-15 in Gold Coast, Australia.
