Fiji Opens The South Pacific Island Nations Cultural Event In Shanghai

The Permanent Secretary for Industry, Trade and Tourism, Shaheen Ali on Tuesday officially opened the South Pacific Island Nations Cultural Event in Shanghai, People’s Republic of China.

The Cultural Event is being held from 26 to 31 December 2017, Jing’an Shangri-la Hotel in Shanghai.

Promoting cultural exchange and trade flows

The week-long cultural event aims to provide visitors a rare chance to interact with diversified cultural elements of South Pacific Region.

Twenty seven nations and territories, including Fiji, Solomon Islands, Norfolk Island, are showcasing their culture, art, food, handicraft and products.

Mr Ali, during the opening stated that such events play a very important role in promoting cultural exchange and trade flows between China and the South Pacific Region.

He further stated that Fiji and China share a special relationship with is evident from the high-level commitment provided from both sides.

“Due to the unwavering efforts on both sides, the bilateral relations between Fiji and China have also been translated into concrete progress contributing towards broad co-operation particularly in trade, investment and tourism, which the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism is most committed to,” added the Permanent Secretary.

Looking ahead of 2018

To continue and extend that momentum, the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism, in collaboration with our Consulate General/Trade Commission in Shanghai will redouble our efforts to bring in more Fijian made products and services to the Chinese market.

“Looking ahead in 2018, we are already planning many exciting trade, investment and tourism promotion and marketing events in China, including our participation in the inaugural China International Import Expo to be held in Shanghai in November next year”, stated Mr Ali.

“We also endeavor to increase people-to-people connectivity, trough culture, sports and training, which is an essential element of the ‘Belt and Road’ Initiative”, added Mr Ali.

The week-long event is supported by the Shanghai Municipality, Shanghai Tourism bureau (Jing An District), as well as Fijian Trade Commission/Consulate General among other diplomatic corps in its preparation. E.I.C Consultancy Group Co., Ltd., the organiser and long-time advocate in promoting the South Pacific culture officially launched its International Center for Arts and Culture at the opening ceremony.

The Permanent Secretary together with the Trade Commissioner/Consul-General, Yolinda Chan and officials will over the week also have bilateral meetings with executives from China’s largest communication firm Alibaba, and other prominent businesses in Shanghai and neighbouring cities.
