Former 7s forward believes Baber’s players can do the job if only they work hard.

Former national rugby sevens forward Waqabaca Kotobalavu believes the Gareth Baber coached- side can win the 2017/18 World Sevens Series.

Kotobalavu, a member of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) departed our shores yesterday with 23 officers on a tour of duty to Iraq.

He was a member of the national sevens team that won the 2009 and 2012 Hong Kong 7s tournaments.

Kotobalavu said like any other Fijian he is very concerned with the performance of the current team with the 2016 Olympic Games gold medal win being set as a bench mark.

“The game is set, in terms of attack but they need to work on their defence,” he said.

“The standard of sevens is always going up another notch but we have to be on par and we can still win the series.

“The boys need to organise themselves, the coach is alright but it all comes down to the individual players. There have been new blood in the team but that’s not an excuse we need to play and put our lives on the line.”  Kotobalavu’s best memory in the abbreviated code was making his debut at the Hong Kong 7s 2009. They scored a 26-24 upset win over South Africa in the Cup final.

The Fijians had forwards Seremaia Burotu, Pio Tuwai, Emosi Vucago, Vereniki Goneva, Osea Kolinisau and Nasoni Roko.

“It was my debut in sevens rugby at the age of 21,” he added.

Kotobalavu also captained the Fijian Under-20 rugby side after helping Queen Victoria School Under-19 team win the Deans Trophy in 2007.

The former Suva rugby flanker has urged the current national seven’s players to keep on training hard and make sacrifices when the need arises.

“Sacrifice now and enjoy it later,” he added.
