ATS Workers Beef Up Negotiating Team

As mediation talks between striking workers and the management of the Air Terminal Services continue, the workers have beefed up their negotiating team.

We look at the workers and who they have.

Federated Airlines Staff Association (FASA) president Mereavi Vulawalu and national secretary Vilikesa Naulumatua head FASA’s team.

Ms Vulawalu works in the ATS passenger services department as a traffic agent and her job includes check in of passengers and baggage handling.

National secretary Vilikesa Naulumatua head FASA’s team. Mr Naulumatua is employed at ATS as the catering equipment storeman.

FTUC national secretary Felix Anthony, who also sits on several boards of international trade unions.

Mr Anthony is a former staff member of the old Air Pacific and became the secretary of the flight attendants union while employed there.

He was appointed to the Senate in 2002 as one of eight nominees of the Leader of the Opposition.

Mr Anthony was then elected to the House of Representatives, representing the Vuda Open Constituency for the Fiji Labour Party.

As head of FTUC,  Mr Anthony helped establish the People’s Democratic Party, and in May 2014 he was elected party leader.

Following the PDP’s failure to win any seats in the 2014 General Election, he stepped down as leader, and was replaced by Adi Sivia Qoro.

The president of the Fiji Trades Union Congress (FTUC) and general secretary of National Union of Hotel and Catering Employees is one of the two leading unionists at the forefront of the workers side.

Mr Urai, a former employee of the Fiji Electricity Authority, left his employment to become secretary of the FEA Staff Association before taking up the role for the hotel workers.
