A 21-year-old farmer from Nadi was remanded yesterday at the Natabua Corrections Facility by the Nadi Magistrates Court

The accused, William Varo, of Sikituru Village appeared before Magistrate Siromi Turaga charged with one count of arson.

The court heard that the alleged incident occurred on December 24 at Sikituru Village in Nadi. It is alleged that Varo had set fire to a home belonging to Sekove Rauga, a 25-year-old plumber. The house was partly destroyed.

He has opted for a Legal Aid lawyer to represent him.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Frances Bale, who represented the State, asked the court to transfer the matter to the High Court since it was an indictable offence.

The case has been adjourned for mention on January 8 at the Nadi Magistrates Court before the case will be formally transferred to the High Court.
