The Vanuabalavu people raised $68,000 at the Adi Maopa Secondary School in Lomaloma Village in a two-day festival that ended on Thursday.

Vanuabalavu Festival representative, Mesake Koroi said the festival was to thank the people of Vanuabalavu.

“During the two day festival the people had fun and enjoyed all the activities of the day because it was a time for celebration,” Mr Koroi said.

“The $68,000 we collected in the two day festival will be given back to the villages and they will decide what to do with the money.

“They can either use it for their village development or invest it in the Vanuabalavu Holdings Limited (VHL).”

Mr Koroi said they were also thankful to the New Zealand Aid for their assistance in rebuilding the five schools on the island after Tropical Cyclone Winston.

“The people are looking forward to next year when the school opens because they will be entering new schools that were rebuilt with the help of New Zealand Aid costing $10 million,” Mr Koroi said.

“The aid helped to rebuild the five schools, school quarters and Government quarters. The classrooms are one of the best and it is also built to withstand a Category 6 cyclone. It will also be an evacuation centre in the future.”

Vanuabalavu natives from all over the world took part in the festival.
