The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) aims to mobilise and engage new audiences with the launch of its new website late last year.

As Fiji continues its digital expansion, the website will provide easier access to vital maritime safety information for passengers and seafarers alike.

Minister for Local Government, Housing, Environment and Infrastructure and Transport Parveen Bala, in launching the website on December 20, said the website represented advancement in technology that benefitted the developmental sector.

“Advancements in infrastructure and technology have significantly increased Fiji’s digital connectivity to the rest of the world and I am happy to see a Fijian organisation like MSAF taking the lead in initiatives like this,” Mr Bala said.

An MSAF statement also said plans were underway to implement online registrations portal for ships and seafarers.

Developed by Matata Pacific, the website features sections with information about environmental regulations and seafarer information.

It also provides users with latest news on maritime safety and links to MSAF’s social media platforms like Facebook.

“Digital innovation is a major part of MSAF’s Strategic Plan and allows them to continually provide avenues for maritime safety stakeholders to be able to interact with MSAF in important maritime issues,” said MSAF Chief Executive Officer John Tunidau.

According to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, almost 80 per cent of global trade by volume is carried out by sea.

Goal nine of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals supports domestic technology development and innovation in developing countries.
