Netani Talei is urging coaches not to play players in positions they are not comfortable with.

The former national rugby captain made the comment as preparation gears up for the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

“I personally think that we need to stop playing players out of positions. Put players in position they are comfortable with,” he said.

“If they are comfortable playing in their usual position, the whole team benefits.”

The Fiji Airways Flying Fijians players  playing in more than one position include Levani Botia who plays inside centre and also doubles up as flanker for his French club La Rochelle in the Top 14 competition.

Semi Kunatani also plays wing/flanker for Toulouse and Nikola Matawalu  wing/halfback/fullback for Glasgow Warriors.

“We’re getting there and we should accelerate the process as teams like Japan, Georgia are getting ahead of us although we are ranked 10th in the world,”the Tavualevu native said.

“The RWC is around the corner and we need to up the game. Everyone needs to back the Fiji Rugby Union. We need to up our game and fitness.”

Talei retired after playing 30 Tests for Fiji and is currently a coach/trainer based in London.

He is in the country with his wife and son and assisted the Nadi Aviators rugby league team who are preparing for the Melanesia Cup in February.

“I am grateful to share my experience,” he said.

Talei made his debut for Fiji in 2006 and was a member of the 2007 RWC team in France.

He played in three pool games before being injured.

He played for Doncaster Knights, Worcester Warriors, Edinburgh, Newport Gwent Dragons and Harlequins.
