Woman fails to appear for theft charge

A 20-year-old woman charged with stealing a mobile phone worth $600 failed to appear yesterday at the Suva Magistrates Court.

Meredani Ross is charged with one count of theft where she followed an Ante natal clinic nurse to a restaurant on March 21, last year between 10:45am and 1pm.

Ross had allegedly gone to the hospital to enquire about two doctors from the complainant and was on her way to the bus stop when they met again and the complainant offered to pay her fare to town.

At the restaurant Ross allegedly asked the complainant to use her mobile phone to call her friend. The complainant gave her the phone and Ross left the restaurant with the phone when the complainant was not looking.

Ross was apprehended by Police where she admitted to taking the phone and even identified the person she sold it to.

The phone was recovered and handed to the complainant who positively identified it as hers.

Magistrate Asanga Bodaragama adjourned the case to be called in Court 6 on January 18, 2018.
