The Foundation for the Education of Needy Children in Fiji (FENC) has received 3200 applications for assistance for the 2018 school year.

This is compared to 1242 children they assisted last year.

FENC Fiji representative Dwain Qalovaki said each year the children assisted get two new pairs of school uniform, sandals, school bag and stationery.

“For each child that FENC Fiji is able to assist, it cost the organisation $200.

“We are reviewing all the applications received which is a huge increase compared to last year.”

FENC Fiji is voluntary, non-profit, cause-oriented organisation that provides educational and related support to children of the poorest of poor families in Fiji.

The FENC Fiji selection criteria is detailed for you:

Low income family unable to afford educational expenses (less than $100 a week in a family that has more than three children)

High risk families (in a desperate situation without a regular income or suffering from trauma)

Child close to dropping out due to family circumstances such as separation

Not being assisted by other organisations

Children of a single parent in a needy situation

Children of those on family assistance scheme with the Department of Social Welfare

Children of agriculture labourers and minorities in a needy situation

Children of parents with disabilities or major illness in a needy situation

Children in the care of relatives without a regular income.
