Minister for Health and Medical Services Rosy Akbar visited Labasa Hospital’s dengue hub centre yesterday.

Her visit follows after the Labasa Hospital responded to the current surge in dengue cases by activating the Dengue Hub Centre.

During the visit Ms Akbar spoke to the patients at the centre and had discussions with the heads of the medical departments.

After visiting the Labasa Hospital, she visited Savusavu Sub-divisional Hospital.

In a Ministry of Health and Medical Services statement, it stated that a few weeks ago there had been a notable increase in the number of dengue fever cases in the Macuata Subdivision, mainly localised to the Labasa Town area in the last four weeks.

The weekly numbers of confirmed dengue cases have surpassed the expected numbers for this time of the year.

It was revealed that with the current trend of cases seen, it is evident that Macuata, and specifically Labasa, was experiencing a surge of dengue fever.

From December 1 to 27, last year, a total of 302 patients with dengue like symptoms had required intravenous fluid hydration, after being assessed by doctors in the Hub.

There has been an average of 13 patients per day treated with intravenous fluids at the Hub in the last week.

Out of those 13 patients, one to two patients are admitted to Labasa Hospital with dengue fever.

However there have been no admissions for severe dengue (ie, dengue shock, or dengue haemorrhagic fever), and no deaths during the current outbreak period (from November 20 to date).
