Magistrates Court Rejects Couple’s Bail Application

A man and his girlfriend were yesterday refused bail by the Suva Magistrates Court for offences relating to escaping and harbouring a prisoner.

The first accused, Ravuama Kedrabuka, 34, was alleged to have escaped from the Samabula Police Station on December 23, 2017.

His 23-year-old girlfriend, the second accused Wainisi Vakacegu Tuinaceva, allegedly assisted him on January 2 and 3, 2018. She is charged with harbouring a prisoner.

They appeared before Magistrate Asanga Bodaragam facing one count of escape from lawful custody and harbouring a prisoner.

Police prosecutor Constable Walter Taito objected to their bail on the ground that the charges against them showed that they had the intention of evading the law.

Constable Taito said there was no assurance that the duo would appear in court if they were released on bail.

Disclosures were also served to the accused in court.

Magistrate Bodaragama accepted Constable Taito’s objections and rejected their bail application.

The case was adjourned to January 16 to be called before Magistrate Jioji Boseiwaqa.
