Man Who Allegedly Assaulted 8-year-old son Granted Bail

A man charged with one count of assault causing actual bodily harm against his eight-year-old son was granted bail by the Labasa Magistrates Court, yesterday.

Resident Magistrate Jeremaia Savou granted the man’s bail application under two strict conditions, which are a $200 bail bond and a restraining order.

Magistrate Savou said the alleged offence took place on December 19, 2017 at Waitavala in Taveuni.

“You assaulted your eight-year-old son at Waitavala in Taveuni on December 19, 2017, where he sustained serious injuries,” he said.

“With the bail granted, you are not allowed to have direct contact with your eight-year-old son and will need to pay for a bail bond of $200.”

“You are not allowed to have contact with your son until your next hearing.”

The court heard that the eight-year-old child is currently living with a relative.

The matter will be called again at the Taveuni Magistrates Court on February 15, 2018.
