Motor Vehicle Accident Levies Outlined

The Land Transport Authority started receiving Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Levies for new and renewed compensation covers from January 2.

Under the Act, Government now handles Accident Compensation instead of insurance companies.

All Accident Levies are now paid at all LTA offices around the country.

The Accident Compensation Act 2017 was passed in Parliament last year.

The new MVA Levy is established through the Accident Compensation Commission of Fiji (ACCF), with services offered by LTA.

The ACCF have advised the general public that effective from January 1 this year, the Accident Compensation Act 2017 and the new ‘no fault compensation’ scheme would apply to motor vehicle accidents in Fiji.

In a statement by ACCF, it said with the activation Accident Compensation Act 2017, the Motor Vehicles Third Party Insurance Act 1948 and Motor Vehicles Third Party Insurance Regulations 1949 have been repealed.

The LTA will from collect the relevant MVA Levies as gazetted under the Accident Compensation Levies Regulations 2017.

In line with LTA’s existing vehicle registration process, all owners of motor vehicles for which the Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance cover expires on or after January 1, 2018; will be required to pay the relevant MVA Levy to any LTA Office and in this first instance, also provide a copy of the vehicle’s 2017 CTP insurance policy.
