Police Await Family Complaint On Drowning

Police Chief of Operations ACP Rusiate Tudravu said Police have yet to receive word from the family of a man who drowned in the Dreketi River in Lautoka on Tuesday.

The body of the deceased  Ratu Jope Sigaruarua, 23, was recovered on Thursday morning.

The family alleged that Ratu Jope was calling out to Police officers to save him as he was having difficulties in the strong currents.

His uncle, former Member of Parliament Ratu Isoa Tikoca, said according to witnesses, Ratu Jope called out to the three Police officers who were part of the search party looking for escaped convict Deshwar Kishore Dutt.

The family claimed the Police officers left without assisting the deceased.

Ratu Isoa said an official submission would be lodged by the family after the funeral was completed.

Late yesterday, ACP Tudravu said Police officers were in the area but nowhere near the bridge where the deceased had been jumping off into the water.

But police would investigate once a communication from the family had been lodged, he said.

Family sources told the Fiji Sun that funeral arrangements had been put on hold pending the completion of a post-mortem examination.
