A 60-year-old man from Korotogo, Sigatoka, appeared yesterday in the Nadi Magistrates Court charged with two counts of possession of illicit drugs.

The unemployed accused, Mahend Maharaj, appeared before Magistrate Chandni Dias.

The court heard that on January 6, while being stopped and searched at a Police roadblock at Korolevu, the accused was allegedly found in possession of 2.9 grams of marijuana and 3.3 grams of methamphetamine.

Maharaj was represented by Patrick Kumar who made an application for bail since his client cares for a sickly child. Police prosecutor Sergeant Mohammed Shameem represented the State and objected to bail saying it was a serious offence, the matter was of public interest, methamphetamine was not made locally but smuggled into the country and Maharaj was caught at a road block in Korolevu.

Mr Kumar presented documents to support the application but Magistrate Dias said the documents produced were misleading.

The Magistrate upheld the prosecution submission and remanded Maharaj at the Natabua Corrections Centre.

The case has been adjourned to January 23, at the Sigatoka Magistrates Court.
