Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji will soon conduct investigations as how the landing barge Kaiwai ship sank in Yasawa on November 28 last year.

MSAF chief executive officer John Tunidau while confirming the investigation on Monday did not confirm the exact date.

“Our officers will be conducting an investigation as to how the barge sank in Yasawa on November,” Mr Tunidau said.

“We will also investigate as to what caused the oil spill,” he added.

“At this stage of time, I cannot divulge any other information.”

The barge had sank in the early hours resulting in two people losing their lives, one still missing and nine rescued in rough seas off the coast of Bukama on the northern part of Yasawa.

In an earlier interview, officer-in charge of Navy operations, Lieutenant Commander Timoci Naituva said streaks of oil were noticed around where the vessel sank.

“Right now we do not know how much oil has spilled,” Mr Naituva said.

Aerial search for the missing Korean national was suspended on November 31.

“We are on standby if required but can only do things within our capacity,” he added.

Meanwhile, the sunken vessel MV Southern Phoenix is expected to be removed from the Suva Harbour at the end of this month.

The ship has been in the Suva Harbour for more than seven months now.

“We have had a meeting with the Fiji Ports Corporation Limited and the vessel owners, everything has just been finalised,” Mr Tunidau said.

“Works on the removal of the ship will begin at end of this month.”

He added that the vessel remains under the authority’s surveillance to ensure spills from the ship were dealt with.

Cruz Holdings Limited according to its website has a fleet of nine vessels including Southern Phoenix, general cargo container MV Komaiwai; landing barge L C Senikabuta, dump barge D B Yarra I; dump barge D P Yarra II; landing barge Adi Waitui; ocean going tug boat MT Bandicoot; ocean going tug boat MT Mariner and fire fighting tug boat M T Numb.
