Five junior sailors from Savusavu have made their town proud following their outing at the 2018 Australia Sailing Junior National Championship in Brisbane, Australia.

Six junior sailors represented Fiji and five were from the Hidden Paradise which Savusavu sailing executive Justin Hunter believes is a milestone achievement.

“Our small town of Savusavu has no proper sporting facilities, infrastructure, full time coaches but what it does have is an amazing community spirit and people with passion,” she said.

Savusavu sailors Robert Hunter and Paul Leca competed in the Intermediate Optimist and had the best finish of 15th and 31st place respectively out of the 76.

Robert, 12, said their debut trip was a great learning experience.

“Finishing in 15th place was a good finish for me in my first international competition, I love to sail and the trip was also a good learning experience. One of the main lessons was using the equipment, adjusting myself to the weather and environment. “I was glad to be accompanied by five sailors from my home town of Savusavu.”

The five Savusavu sailors were Hunter, Amanu Simpson, Naomi Waqalevu, Paul Leca and Vili Ratulu. The other sailor was Suva’s Sophia Morgan.
