Rewa Rugby Union president Ro Filipe Tuisawau has supported Fiji Rugby Union’s move to contract 40 players from each of the Skipper Cup teams.

“It is not only historic but more importantly it is good for rugby in Fiji and the development of local players,” he said.

Ro Filipe said the contracting and paying of provincial players would be a motivating factor in itself for them to do better.

He said majority of the local players are unemployed.

“Despite limited resources FRU has, the move is an important step in the right direction for the growth and development of the game.”

Fiji Airways Fijians 7s coach Gareth Baber also showed his support for the FRU initiative as it could really affect a player’s performance in a positive way.

However, Ro Tuisawau was upbeat and optimistic of Rewa’s chances in this year’s Skipper Cup competition.

“For us developing our club game is very critical and taking part in this year’s 10s competition was a good platform for us heading in to the 2018 Skipper Cup competition.”
