Authority restores power in west towns

Electricity has been restored in areas of the Western Division affected by heavy rain and flooding
The Fiji Electricity Authority said places that experienced power cuts have since had it restored.
“All the major outages in Ba, Tavua and Rakiraki on Sunday night during the height of the flooding have since been reconnected,” FEA’s executive projects and public relations manager Karunesh Rao said
At the time of this report, heavy rain was being experienced in Tavua, Ba and Nadi and people were being urged to move livestock to higher ground.
“Our teams are on stand-by and we are monitoring the situation in the Westen Division.”
Most parts of the division suffered yet another devastating flood on Sunday night through to the early hours of yesterday morning.
As excited school children woke up to begin the school year on Monday morning, they were met with debris and flood waters in their neighborhood.
Shop owners and commuters alike complained about the flood and how it continued to affect the western towns.
“It’s about time we addressed this seriously. I just don’t know how much longer we can endure this.” Anshu Prasad, a resident of Varadoli in Ba said.
“Just a small rain and it floods. This happens all the time. I just don’t know what the authorities are doing. Why is it flooding like this all the time?”
Shop owners were no different.
“This affects us so much. We are always having to clean up, our furniture gets damaged and the monetary value to the damage is the thing that affects us badly.” Dinesh Kumar, owner of K-Cube Variety Store said.
Tavua and Rakiraki Police confirmed that by 8am, things had returned to normal.
Water cuts were also experienced in Tavua and Ba as people were seen lining up with buckets to await delivery by the town councils.
“We’ve had no water since this morning but we are hoping that everything will be restored soon.” Navitalai Koroi, of Vatia outside of Tavua said.
