Fijian featherweight boxing champion Krishna Mudaliar has moved up to fight in the welterweight division.

Mudaliar confirmed to SUNsports yesterday that he is going to fight journeyman Ulaiasi Qalomai in the welterweight category at the Novotel Suva Lami Bay Convention Centre on February 2.

The fight is one of the undercards to the World Boxing Foundation Asia Pacific super lightweight clash between holder Sebastian Singh and challenger Brett ‘Sugar’ Dames of Australia.

“I’m thankful to the promoter for giving me the opportunity to fight a tough and experienced boxer like Qalomai, he said.

The 27-year-old who originally hails from Nadi is confident of his chances and is confident of coming out as a winner.

“I’m looking forward to win this fight as I have bigger plans for this year and winning from here will be a good platform to go further.”

Mudaliar thanked his sponsors All Make Auto Spare, Best Promotion and Vikash Upholstery and Leather Works.

“Without their sponsorship it would have been difficult financing my preparation for this fight, because sponsors play a big role in every boxer’s preparations.”

Mudaliar said the reason he decided to move up to the welterweight division was mainly because he wanted to fight tougher boxers.

“There are a lot of tough local and international fighters out there in the welterweight division and I’m looking forward to facing off with them too,” he added.
Krishna is the younger brother of bantamweight champion Krishnil Mudaliar.
