Defending champions First Light Taveuni and crowd favourites Ratu Filise were among the strong performers on day one at the 2018 Mana Whey Fiji Coral Coast at the Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka yesterday.

First Light Taveuni laced with national squad members Glen Cakautini, Lemeki Tulele and Emori Vucago played well as they ran riot in their Pool Q beating Henibua 19-17, 12-7 over Police and edged Daveta 19-17.

“It is our aim is to defend our title,” said Cakautini who replaced player of the tournament last year Tulele who was injured.

“We have played well taking each match as a final in all the games. All teams are tough.”

The Dreu Vukailagicoached Ratu Filise team beat Hong Kong 22-10, upset McDonald’s Saunaka 12-5 and hammered Tovolea 24 -0.

Wardens remain undefeated after beating Cross of Victory 12-, hammered USA Stars 22-0, and 35-0 over BLK Iron Courage.

McDonald’s Saunaka beat Tovolea 12-5, lost to Ratu Filise 12-5 and beat Hong Kong 19-12 to qualify for the Cup quarter-final.

Saunaka team manager Pesi Nasau said, “We have won all the sevens tournaments in Fiji but we have not won this one. We hope to win just like any other team.”
