The Vesidrua Bridge, which is the only access linking people that go to and from Labasa to Savusavu and Nabouwalu in Vanua Levu has been reinforced.

Straddling the Vesidrua River, the 25-metre, single-lane wooden bridge is located along the Labasa/Nabouwalu Highway, 10 kilometres away from Seaqaqa.

“The approach to the bridge from the Labasa side had been damaged and the deck of the bridge completely damaged because of age,” said Fulton Hogan Hiways Natua Depot supervisor, Alifereti Cati.

Mr Cati said, “the loss of material from bridge deck and approaches is just the normal wear and tear. These are major concerns for bridge repairs in the North.

“We will remove the damaged planks on the deck and replace them with new ones for the safety of motorists and pedestrians that use the bridge daily.”

With the temporary repairs to the bridge completed, Fiji Roads Authority is now set to create a by-pass beside the Vesidrua Bridge to fortify it further.
