Nursing Union Marks 40 Years

The Fiji Nursing and Associates Credit Union yesterday marked its 40th anniversary.

The celebration was held at the Fiji Muslim League hall in Suva, followed by a gala dinner celebration at the Vine Yard Restaurant.

The credit union also launched its book ‘Thrift and Independence For The Nurses of Fiji’.

Chief guest and former credit union president, Mereani Tukana, said it was a blessing for her to witness the fascinating chronicle of the growth of the credit union.

“My preparation for this task of reading the book has taken me down some beautiful and some not so beautiful memories, but it has provided me with a time for reflections,” she said.

“Fiji Nursing and Associates Credit Union has now reached the mature adulthood. Its birth 40 years ago followed a gestational period similar to that of a normal pregnancy.

“Being a parent during that time, Fiji Nursing Association had so much pride in the conception that it allowed us to leave the safety of home and go out on our own as a new and separate organisation soon after birth,” Ms Tukana said.

Going back in history, she said the credit union sprang from the need to fulfil basic human needs in the great depression.

“There was  escalating unemployment, poverty and starvation and high levels of household debt,” she said.

“I don’t have to remind anyone that the most unique feature of the credit union is the common bond that links its members who pool a lot of very hard earned savings.

“I encourage nurses to unfold the pages of the book and read our stories of over the years to explore the different stages of our development and to also discover the full privileges and benefits a member can enjoy being a part of this organisation. I am sure they will not be disappointed,” she said.

The Fiji Nursing and Associates Credit Union has 1154 members with four Golden Members – Erini Saukelea, Kite Vucago, Salome Bikai, and Alumita Kini.
