The Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s team are on a mission to redeem themselves and steer their 2017/18 World Sevens Series campaign back on track.

The Iliesa Tanivula coached-side are aiming to secure a Cup quarterfinal berth at this weekend’s Sydney Sevens following a poor performance in the opening tournament in Dubai.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, Tanivula said all teams competing in Sydney have stepped-up and are going to be very tough.

“But if we can top our pool then we can achieve our aim of playing in the quarterfinal in Sydney,” the former Auckland Blues winger said.

“We’re hoping to meet Australia in the quarterfinal since they have set the tone in Dubai. We are looking forward to test ourselves and see what we can achieve.”

POOL GAMES

The Fijians are in Pool C where they face Canada, Russia and Ireland. Dubai champions and hosts Australia take on France, Spain and Papua New Guinea in Pool A.

“The main focus in our preparation has been conditioning and this has boosted the girls.

“We hope that things get better when we get into Sydney. If it works better then it is a bonus, as the girls have sacrificed a lot in the festive season.

“Physically they are in good condition when compared to Dubai and we’re looking forward.

“We’ve done a lot of video analysis and again there is no easy game.”

The Fijiana 7s side are in 11th spot out of the 12 teams with two points.

The side play their tournament opener on Friday against Canada at 11.22am, then Russia in their second pool match at 1.44pm and the final pool clash against Ireland at 4.50pm.
