Assessors Find 65-year-old Guilty Of Raping Granddaughter

A 65-year-old man accused of sexually assaulting and raping his seven year old granddaughter between 2012 and 2014 was found guilty yesterday by the three assessors.

Judge Justice Vincent Perera will hand down the final judgement today.

The trial assessors delivered a unanimous verdict in the Suva High Court.

The accused is charged with two counts of sexual assault and one count of rape.

On the first count, between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2014 the grandfather allegedly sexually assaulted his granddaughter by touching her private parts.

On the second count between the same period, he allegedly sexually assaulted her again by rubbing a banana on top of her private parts. For the third count of rape, he allegedly had sex with her whilst she was a child under the age of 13 years old.

The accused was remanded in custody and the case has been adjourned to today for the final verdict by Justice Perera.
