The Chinese national men and women’s rugby 7s teams are in the country for five weeks to prepare for the Hong Kong 7s tournament in March.

Both teams are training under the watchful eyes of former USA 7s winger and national 400m champion runner Jovesa Naivalu at Nadovu grounds, Lautoka, yesterday.

The teams will be participating in several local tournaments as they pursue bettering themselves in all aspects of the game.

“This is a good team,” Naivalu said.

“They have done all the preparations in China, and now they are here for a good hit-out with the local players and teams just trying to learn all they can.

“Because of the Olympic win in Rio and Fiji’s performance over the years, countries like China want to come and learn from the masters of the game.”

Naivalu said that even though language was a barrier, the teams were well-versed with the rules of the abbreviated code and were enthusiastic and very attentive.

“They are amazing. They are very eager to learn and they have given all their best during all training sessions.

“All these years they have only been part of the Asian competitions and the Hong Kong 7s so their coming to Fiji is actually a step of faith for the players and the management.”
