The Labasa Town Council workers took an initiative to clean up the botanical gardens and portions of a nearby river bank yesterday.

Savusavu and Labasa town council special administrator Vijay Chand said people should always keep their surroundings clean.

“It is a plea from our Prime Minister on television every day. Even then people still ignore the message and continue to dispose of their garbage carelessly,” Mr Chand said.

“Council workers took an initiative to clean up areas of the town that have been littered by people.”

Mr Chand is hopeful people will take more responsibility and deposit rubbish in proper places.

“Areas cleaned up included the botanical gardens and portions of river banks where people often go to for recreational purposes and leave behind empty bottles and disposable food containers,” he said.

“I want to remind offenders that anti-litter officers will be on patrol and on the lookout. Anyone found to be disposing garbage or associated items carelessly will be fined on the spot.”

Mr Chand is urging ratepayers, visitors to Labasa and the general public to show civic pride by keeping the town and surrounding areas clean and beautiful.
