Ratu Kini Viliame has major plans for his poultry business after a $1000 Government grant boosted its prospects.

A small section of his compound in Sadro Village, Deuba, has been converted into a chicken shed. Materials for the shed were bought using the grant and business is running smoothly.

In 2015, while working at a popular beverage company, the 29-year-old decided to act on a business idea he had for some time, so he applied for the grant. The Micro and Small Business Grant is a government initiative in support and encouragement of startups and business ventures.

“I want to thank the Government for thinking about the poor in this country,” he said.

“My family and I have benefitted from it and I’ve been working extra hard since I started to make the business a success.”

He sells his chicken for $20 each. From the few hundred chickens that he owns today, Mr Viliame hopes to one day have 13,000 chickens under his care.

He said the money from the business was kept aside for emergency situations and the day-to-day needs of his six children.  Edited by Percy Kean
