Lautoka rugby coach Osea Umuumulovo is a man on a mission. Since taking up the coaching job Umuumulovo’s primary objective is to get the Maroons back to the Skipper Cup competition.

Speaking to SUNsports from Nadovu Park, last Saturday, Umuumulovo said the six franchise teams have prepared well and are looking forward to the Lautoka 15s competition that gets underway this week.

“The whole idea of these friendly matches is to give players a good run so they can get accustomed to the play as they prepare for next week,” he said.

“I think Lautoka has a lot of potential and we need to have a system in place in order to introduce the game from grassroots level and up.

“Having the clubs being represented as franchise will help in the selection process and at the same time get the best out of the teams.”

Umuumulovo added that there are 36 clubs to play in the competition.

“This will be a one-day event, but the venue is still to be confirmed. For today’s matches we are not focused on the point system, but the way the teams adhere to the rules of the game and the fitness level. “So from here we will move towards the round robin matches then to other cup competitions.”
