Farmers living along the Irrigation Back Road just outside Nausori Town are now able to transport their produce to the market faster.

More importantly, students who live in the area can attend their classes daily after the Fulton Hogan Hiways (FHH) crew repaired the road.

FHH is contracted by Fiji Roads Authority to maintain the unsealed and sealed road networks in the Northern Division.

The Irrigation Back Road is off the Kings Road and runs through the Lakena industrial area. Before the upgrade, vegetable farmer, Mohammed Sayhid, said carriers and four-wheel drive vehicle drivers would avoid travelling along the road. He said the farming settlement had to endure walking on prickly weeds and potholes that increased in number and size after every rainstorm.

“During heavy rain, the road would flood and our children had to stay home until the water went down. We had to carry the vegetables to the main road because carriers were reluctant to come in,” said Mr Sahid.

FHH Rewa Supervisor Ulaiasi Bolalailai said the maintenance crew from the FHH Rewa Depot in Nausori have removed high shoulders, graded, laid and compacted gravel on the one-kilometre-long road, and cleaned out vegetation debris from the roadside drainage.

Since the repairs to Irrigation Back Road, farmers and students now have the luxury to travel comfortably.
