Former national sprint champion Samuela Yavala says athletes need to attend workshops before they take part in high-level competitions.

The Ra native gave a timely reminder as athletes prepare for the Commonwealth Games in April

“Young athletes need to have workshops where they must learn from experienced athletes on how to compete in big competitions,” Yavala said.

“Otherwise it’s just like putting them into the lions’ den and telling them to survive.”

He said that when athletes compete internationally it’s not about gaining experience but building their confidence.

“Most people coming out now don’t have the experience, so they need to build up their experience on the field,” Yavala said.

“Building their experience is building their confidence.”

Yavala first represented Fiji in athletics at the 1969 SPG held in Port Moresby at the age of 21 years when he won 1 gold and 1 silver medal.

He again represented Fiji in the 1971 SPG in Papeete Tahiti and won 2 gold and 2 silver medals. His last appearance for Fiji as a competitor was in the 1979 SPG where he won 2 gold medals, one of them in the blue ribbon event.

Yavala held a number of national and regional records, some of them stood for over 20 years. His 200 metres Native Record of 21.5 secs set on April 10, 1971, was broken in 1993. His 400m SPG record of 47.8 secs set in 1971 was broken in 1991 in Papua New Guinea. His native long jump record of 7.26 metres set on April 14, 1973 and the Native and All-comers record of 10.86 secs in 100m set in 1979.
