Heavy Rain For Fiji, Strong Wind Warning For Rotuma

As in effect by FijiMet, a ‘Heavy Rain Warning’ is now in place for the Yasawa and Mamanuaca Group, Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Lau, and the Lomaiviti Group. A ‘Strong Wind Warning’ is now in force for the Land Areas and Waters of Rotuma.
While you may see some break in the weather activity today, the next three days are expected to bring increasing rain, becoming frequent and heavy at times, coupled with thunderstorms. This is expected as a tropical low develops to the west of the country during this period.
Early next week, the tropical low is expected to intensify into a tropical disturbance and possibly deepen into a Tropical Depression. It may pass close to the country. Associated rain and strong winds which can be gusty at times is likely to affect the country from Monday.
In areas of frequent heavy rain, there is increasing risk of flash flooding and flooding of low-lying or flood prone areas.
In preparation, members of the public should know their emergency contacts, know their nearest evacuation center, and prepare a Family Emergency Kit should the need of evacuation arise.
In the event of a flood, members of the public should take heed of the following advice:
1.)Refrain from walking or driving through flood waters;
2.)Practice caution when travelling along hillsides or landslide-prone areas.
3.)Parents and teachers are to ensure that infants and children do not play in flooded areas, drains, rivers, and other waterways.
4.) Stay informed for regular updates on all media for further alerts or advisories from authorities.
