Samuela Yavala says the Fiji Airways Fijian 7s team revealed a lot of secrets which led to their downfall on the World Sevens Series.

The 1997 Rugby Sevens World Cup trainer said the team have been talking too much prior to the Dubai, Cape Town and Sydney tournaments.

“They were talking too much,” Yavala said.

“That’s the secret, you never tell anybody what you want or intend to do.”

He said the performance reflected on what programme they followed during training.

“Whatever the boys displayed on the field, that’s what they have been taught,” Yavala said.

The former head of sports science department at the Fiji National University strongly also believes the loss was due to the lack of physical and mental preparation.

“I watched the game against New Zealand and there was too much individual performance,”he said.

“Again this reflected on their mental and physical preparation.

“They were not playing as a team, I don’t know why? But again what they displayed on the field is what they have been told.

“If that is the way, then it’s most unfortunate.

“Everybody was expecting Fijian style of rugby but what they displayed was not the way we saw it.

“I haven’t seen their training programme but what I saw on the field doesn’t look good to me.”

With the inconsistent performance of the Fijian 7s team on the World Sevens Series Yavala said physical and psychology preparation work together. If they don’t then it’s a massive problem for our boys.

He also believes skills of players must be coordinated well.

“What’s the point of having beautiful skills if you can’t do it on the field,”he said.

“The only thing that will carry you on the field is the energy that you must supply and energy supplied is not for the sake of supplying but supplied specifically to different areas on the field.

“This needs to be coordinated and if they are not coordinated then fitness will be a waste.”

In Sydney Fiji walloped Samoa 31-5 in their first pool game, thumped Russia 24-0 in their second pool game and defeated New Zealand 19-17 in their final pool match.

The Fijians lost to USA in the cup quaterfinal match 7-24. Defeated Kenya 24-5 in the fifth place semi-final and lost to New Zealand 7-31 in the fifth place final.
