The new Australian High Commissioner to Fiji John Feakes yesterday became the first diplomat to present his i-sevusevu to the Tui Nadi at his residence at Narewa Village in Nadi.

Mr Feakes, who was accompanied by his delegation, was warmly welcomed by the people of the tikina o Nadi in the presence of Roko Tui Ba Jese Volau.

“I felt honoured to be present and in my understanding being the first high commissioner to perform a traditional presentation,” he said after the event.

“I was well received by the Tui Nadi. This was a way to pay my respect to an important person.”

He added this was an exciting time when relations between Australia and Fiji were growing strongly, sharing an enduring friendship and supported by strong people-to-people links.

Appreciated

Narewa village headman Samu Tuidraki said the Tui Nadi Ratu Vuniyani Navuniuci embraced and appreciated the courtesy visit by Mr Feakes.

“This is the first time for any diplomat to come and present the isevusevu and we are blessed to have him,”  Mr Tuidraki said.

“Mr Feakes was welcomed by the Tui Nadi and his people and he was accorded the traditional gesture with tabua, and the protocols, this signifies the high position he holds.”

Mr Tuidraki added that this gesture also means that Mr Feakes not only represented Australia in Fiji at the Government level but at the grassroots as well.
