New Zealand High Commissioner to Fiji Jonathan Curr will take up office in Fiji before the end of this month.

Fiji and New Zealand have a history of close ties involving culture, sport, business, and education.

Currently, Halia Haddad is serving as the Acting New Zealand High Commissioner to Fiji.

Mr Curr is an experienced New Zealand diplomat with a strong interest in the Pacific.

Recently Mr Curr served as New Zealand’s Ambassador to Turkey, concurrently accredited to Israel and Jordan, from 2014 to 2017.

He has also served at New Zealand’s missions in Egypt and Tonga.

Between his offshore postings, Mr Curr had the opportunity to work on a range of Pacific issues, both in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and while working as Private Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Winston Peters.

The New Zealand High Commission in Fiji stated that engagement between the Fijian and New Zealand governments continues to grow, as do the already close defence links in the Pacific and around the world.

Annual two-way trade between Fiji and New Zealand now exceeds FJD$1 billion, placing Fiji amongst New Zealand’s top 20 trading partners.

Fiji also remains a top travel destination for New Zealanders, with visitor numbers growing year on year.

In 2017 New Zealanders made nearly 185,000 trips to Fiji.
