The Fijian Pearls netball team will play in the Quad Series in New Zealand next month as they prepare for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast on April 4-15.

The Vicki Wilson-coached side will play the Silver Ferns, Malawi and Jamaica on March 21-24.

Wilson is aware of the challenge the top teams will provide.

“The Quad Series in March will provide an opportunity for the squad to play against quality opposition and get match fitness,”Wilson said.

“Our opponents are ranked in the top six so the pace will be furious and the skill level will be high.

“It will be a great experience for all players to play against top quality teams.”

The local players are currently undergoing intensive training while overseas based players are monitored by their respective club coaches.

“We are focussing on fitness, skills, positional play and game specific scenarios.

“Overseas players are being monitored via their coaches. All of them are training with their respective club and league teams for their upcoming season,” she added.

Fiji Pool

Fiji is grouped in Pool A with Australia, Jamaica, South Africa, Barbados and Northern Ireland.

“The Commonwealth Games will be extremely tough as there are only 12 teams competing and we are currently ranked 12th.

“To be in the pool against the number one ranked team in the world Australia, 4th ranked team Jamaica and the 5th ranked team South Africa will be a great test for us.

“Unlike the World Championships, there are only two pools – so it doesn’t matter what pool you are in as both pools are difficult for teams ranked outside the top five,” Wilson added.
