The secret is out – the success to any family business is about working together.

These were the words of Naaz Nursery owner, Nazima Begum, at Simla, Lautoka.

The 60-year-old has been in the business for 18 years and with the help of her husband, Mohammed Naushad, 67, their business has been successful. They have four children. Ms Begum was also a recipient of the $1000 Government assistance under the small and micro business grant in 2015.

“I was able to buy new tables for my pot plants. Before I had to put them in pots but now I have proper tables in the nursery.”

In 2014, she imported around 6000 desert flower seedlings from Bangkok, Thailand, which she sold at $500 per pot plant.

Ms Begum also thanked her husband for helping her get into trade shows and various agriculture shows where she managed to win awards for her flowers.

“This is a hobby which I later turned into a business. I love flowers and I also sell them at lower prices for my customers,” she said.

“I want to thank Government for their assistance and now we have plans to start the first bonsai garden in Fiji – a concept from Japan.”

The business secret

Mr Naushad, who worked as a customs agent for 28 years, said he would do research on flowers and advise her wife.

“The success of any family business depends on the heads. I am like her researcher, I look things up for her especially paper work and advise her of the next step. There is greatness in a couple working together,” he said.

“For those receiving the grant, please make good use of it because Government will only be motivated to give more if they see their assistance is put into good use.”
