The Fijian Elections Office (FEO) has been furnished a copy of a statement issued on February 6,  2018 by Mosese Bulitavu.

The FEO has noted that the press release calls for the Supervisor of Elections to immediately issue orders for billboards that have been placed around the country by FijiFirst to be pulled down.

The FEO wishes to respond as follows:

“Firstly, Mr Bulitavu failed to follow the complaints mechanism setup by the Electoral Commission in relation to such issues. The Electoral Complaints mechanism is the most appropriate framework to address matters.

“Secondly, Mr Bulitavu failed to particularise the breaches. This is why it is important that such matters are raised with the FEO and Electoral Commission. We can assist individuals in properly understanding the legal framework. The law does not define campaign period as he incorrectly alludes.

“It is expected that Mr Bulitavu should obtain proper legal advice before making such statements.

“As we proceed to the 2018 General Election, individuals and political parties must ensure that they read the law and at the same time get proper legal advice before making public statements. The FEO will ensure that the voters are protected from unscrupulous activities such as this.”
