To succeed in school and life, students must be healthy, the Minister for Health and Medical Services, Rosy Akbar, says.

She made the remark at the prefects induction ceremony at Suva Muslim College,in Suva, yesterday.

Ms Akbar urged students to be more alert on the food they ate and, warned the link between Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and students was very clear.

“As responsible individuals, we need to take care of our health. We need to eliminate unhealthy food from our daily meals and ensure we eat balanced meals that comprises fruits and vegetables daily,” Ms Akbar said.

“The Health Ministry together with the Ministry of Education last year launched a Health School Policy that monitors school canteens, to ensure that only healthy, nutritious products are sold at the school canteens.

“I would like to encourage each one of you to champion the awareness on NCD prevention, be it within your homes, communities or schools, we must advocate healthy living.

“And if your school is keen on organising any such programmes on healthy living and wellness, my team in Suva would be more than happy to visit and provide the awareness session.”

Newly-inducted headboy Sailosi Raisele and headgirl Faaziah Ali vowed to ensure their school was within the health school policy and that students are champions of NCD prevention throughout the year.
