The Suva Magistrates Court remanded a man on Wednesday for allegedly causing a loss to the Government.

Atunaisa Torani Ravatu appeared before Magistrate Waleen George charged with two counts of general dishonesty (obtaining a gain) and one count of general dishonesty (causing a loss).

On the first count, it is alleged that between May 1, 2016 and November 30, 2016, Ravatu dishonestly caused a loss or risk of a loss to the Government through the Help for Home initiative.

He allegedly misappropriated M-Paisa cards belonging to the villagers of Vuna District, in Taveuni, amounting to $22,231 knowing that substantial risk of loss would occur to the Government.

On the second count, the court heard that Ravatu with the intention of dishonestly obtaining a gain allegedly acquired $1600 for his personal gain from the “Cash Back” promotion given by Vinod Patel Company Limited under the Help for Home initiative.

The offence also took place around the period mentioned above.

He also allegedly acquired $2000 for his personal gain from the “Cash Back” promotion given by the hardware company under the same government initiative.

Ravatu’s right to counsel was read to him in court and he chose to represent himself.

Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption (FICAC) prosecutor Anaseini Lomani sought the court’s leave to file first phase disclosures to the accused and indicated that no recovery was made.

The accused was remanded in custody until February 12, 2018 where his bail application is expected to be heard before Magistrate Liyanage Wickramasekara.
