The Deo family is always on the lookout for food items special.

“We are simple citizens of Labasa so we have to plan and look for opportunities to save,” Vimal Deo said.

Mr Deo is a canecutter and part time taxi driver while his wife Karuna Devi works at a restaurant at Labasa Town.

The Deo family shops once a week with a budget of approximately $150.

The couple are always shopping together and occasionally joined by their two children.

“Our budget includes everything – vegetables, cleaning agents, food items and what our children might need,” Mr Deo said.

“We are always shopping now at Max Val-U supermarket because their prices are reasonable and we can work ourselves around our budget,” he said.

Items they need during the following week are usually bought by Ms Devi when she returns from work.

“She buys the other items we might need because she works in town and she can bring them back with her,” he said.

“I always look around for anything new and on special because I like to cook different varieties of food especially something new for my family,” Ms Devi said.

“But we keep to our budget,” she said.

“My children are growing up and I sometimes bring them with me when we come to do our shopping.

“It is important that our children learn from us about saving.”

Mr Deo said it was not only a women’s job to do shopping for the family.

“I sometimes drive a taxi when it is not sugarcane season just to help around the house,” the 44-year-old said.

“We also buy our vegetables every week but sometimes my wife buys on her way home from work because it is still fresh.”

He said his family worked together to make life easy for all of them.
