With 80 per cent of deaths in the Pacific attributed to Non Communicable Diseases (NCD) the Minister for Health Rosy Akbar says it is serious and one way to combat this killer disease is to be active and fit.

She made the comments as more than 150 participants braved the wet and cold conditions yesterday to take part in the Sports World Fun Run in Suva.

The Fun Run was organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Courts Fiji.

The event, which is part of the ministry’s strategy in the battle against NCDs, saw participants determined to show the importance of keeping healthy.

“The ministry is serious and NCD can be reversed with healthy living and having self-discipline, healthy eating and exercising to ensure that one’s health is always a priority and people will live a longer life,” Ms Akbar said.

Sports World general manager Vinod Naidu said he anticipated 700 participants for the event, but nevertheless he acknowledged and thanked people who attended the event.

Courts director marketing Anil Senewiratne said the four months promotion of the wellness programme was part of the health fitness promotion initially launched by the Minister for Health Rosy Akbar.

Mr Senewiratne said they have witnessed the results of the programme by the number of people who turned up to the event ready to make an investment in a healthy lifestyle.

Minister for Health Rosy Akbar said she was overwhelmed by the number of people who turned up to the event despite the weather condition.

Ms Akbar in acknowledging the ministry’s partnership said that there were a variety of NCD cases in Fiji and the programme was aimed to raise awareness and get more Fijians to know the importance of having a healthy lifestyle.

“Eighty per cent of deaths in the Pacific is attributed to NCDs and this is serious, one way to combat this killer disease is to be active and fit.”
