Fijian soldiers serving under the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) are safe in the Golan Heights, the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces has confirmed.

RFMF Commander Rear Admiral Viliame Naupoto said he had been receiving regular updates since Israel set off the red alert siren on Saturday.

“I have been in-touch with our Fijian soldiers regularly and they are fine; we want the parents and families to know our soldiers are fine and are safe,” he said.

He confirmed that movement was restricted for the camp in Syria. The Israeli camp where a number of Fijian soldiers are based, have also been issued a restriction on their movements.

“I have been in-touch regularly, their movements are restricted in and out of the two camps in Syria and Israel,” Rear Admiral Naupoto said.

As always, he said, the monthly church service at the Queen Elizabeth Barracks yesterday, also held a prayer for the 348 soldiers on the ground in the Golan Heights.

It is understood there are 80 Fijian peacekeepers on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights, who are all on high alert after explosions were heard. The rest of the Fijian peacekeepers are on Israeli soil.

The latest incident marks the heightening of tension between Israel and Syria.
