As Tropical Cyclone Gita passed yesterday, villagers of Daliconi in Vanuabalavu  in Northern Lau were prepared for the worst from anticipated strong winds.

A Daliconi woman, Sera Yara, who also works for Pacific Building Solutions (PBS), explained that everyone had prepared for the worst by putting shutters on windows and storing away any materials that could have caused damage.

Speaking from the PBS camp site on the island Ms Yara said children were still traumatised after TC Winston in 2016, however parents were mentally prepared if they were to face the same situation.

“Our children are still traumatised from the havoc caused by TC Winston in 2016. Any strong winds and heavy rain will force children to remain indoors,” she said.

“The newly completed school building constructed by PBS and funded by the New Zealand Government was used as an evacuation centre.

“In times of cyclones the school building now stands as a great blessing for us and the surrounding settlements.”
