Tending to goats, cows and ducks is something that Roshni Lata loves and carries out with zeal.

To begin with, the 47–year-old is an animal lover and caring for the cattle on her farm comes naturally for the hardworking woman.

Ms Lata is one of the recipients of Government’s Small and Micro Business Grant after she lost half her livestock in Tropical Cyclone Winston.

“We have 10 acres here and with the grant we were able to get proper fences, and we bought some goats and cows,” she said.

“Before we had fences, we were facing problems with wild dogs that were hunting in packs.

“One time, the pack killed 17 goats and that was heartbreaking. They didn’t eat them or drag them away, just bit and killed them and left them there.

“My husband felt like giving up when he saw what happened. We just thought of all the money that we lost when they were killed.”

Ms Lata’s next aim was to comply with the requirements to have six goats per acre.

“That is the requirement and we want to abide by it so we can better care and manage their feeding, their care and especially when they need to drink their medicine.”

The hardworking farmer encourages other women to take up farming.

“We can all do it. It’s not just for men. We as women can do it too and it will be of great benefit to us. We learn so many things when we are involved in this.

“This is the first time we received the grant and we are just so very grateful to Government for this. We can live life better, we can care for our family and expand what we have because of that grant,” she said.
